The GDPHL is a two-story building that measures 66,030 gross square feet and contains large, open Biosafety Level 2 (BL-2) laboratory areas and smaller BL-3 areas, as well as administrative offices, conference areas, and classrooms. BL-2 labs are suitable for work involving agents of moderate potential hazard to personnel and the environment. BL-3 areas are suitable for the study of airborne transmissible diseases. An energy retrofit project was performed that reworked existing chilled water, hot water and laboratory control systems to save the State of Georgia almost 50% in utility costs over the first year. TSCx commissioned the following systems: mechanical, electrical, and laboratory controls, including enclosure, lighting, humidity, building pressurization, heating capacity and cooling capacity.
TSCx has commissioned four projects at the Public Health Lab in the last five years. Ongoing projects include chiller and cooling tower replacements with more energy efficient models.
